Introduction to Rails

We’ll introduce three major themes at the outset, and invite the participants to watch for those themes throughout the course. Those themes:

• It’s Just Feedback Loops - Let the tools tell you what to do next
• It’s Just a Request - what is the lifecycle of an HTTP request as it makes its way through the Rails framework?
• It’s Just MVC - Rails is an implementation of the MVC design pattern, but with some HTTP-imposed caveats

Sample Syllabus / Schedule

This is a sample syllabus that represents a typical course. But, every class is different. Based on the collective experiences of the attendees, we will re-order, add, and remove modules in order to provide the most relevant content.

For example, there is some overlap between this course and our Advanced Intro to Rails course, but fast moving groups may be able to cover additional content from that course as well.

The course over a series of three and a half hour sessions spread over five days. This sample syllabus assumes a schedule starting on a Monday and ending on a Friday.

• Simple ActiveRecord relationships
• Defining Factories with FactoryBot

Thursday

• Scopes
• Implementing Many-to-Many relationships
• N+1 query problems

Friday

• Sending emails with ActionMailer
• Serialization and background jobs
